Job Summary

WTOC News, a leading news organization, seeks a highly skilled and experienced journalist to serve as Assistant News Director. This key role will oversee the day-to-day operations of the newsroom, ensuring seamless coverage of breaking news and daily events across all platforms.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct daily news coverage, including breaking news, on-air and online
  • Work closely with producers, anchors, and MMJs to develop strong storytelling skills and unique showcasing in every newscast
  • Coordinate staffing and schedules with the assignment manager
  • Coach and mentor staff to elevate writing and storytelling
  • Manage the daily editorial process and on-air execution of newscasts
  • Develop news coverage strategy for the station and digital platforms
  • Critique newscasts and website content daily to correct errors, improve coverage, and provide mentoring feedback to news staff
  • Provide content for newscasts and website as needed
  • Help gather sources and stories for newscasts and MMJs
  • Take charge of specials, projects, and live events as assigned
Requirements
  • BA in Journalism with a minimum of years of experience in a television newsroom, including some management experience
  • Strong management, communication, and people skills required to supervise and interact daily with staff and the community
  • Proven leadership ability
  • Creativity and passion for news
  • Knowledge and understanding of using various digital and social platforms
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task in high-stress situations
  • Detail-oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Optional bilingual - Spanish
