At EDP Energias de Portugal S.A., we are seeking a highly skilled Substation Electrical Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our High Voltage Operations Team, you will provide critical support in the areas of ongoing maintenance activities and projects, integration of new facilities, betterment project development, and interdepartmental communication.

The successful candidate will serve as the Company's subject matter expert on high-voltage issues, working closely with other High Voltage Operations staff and Electrical Engineers in Houston. Your expertise will be essential in providing electrical, high-voltage, collection system, and substation support to operating renewable generation facilities, including intermittent on-call support.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Provide electrical, high-voltage, collection system, and substation support to operating renewable generation facilities
  • Participate in the engineering, design, and construction review processes
  • Support new project commissioning, documentation support, and assist with project energization
  • Review and continuously improve commissioning, maintenance, and standard operating procedures
  • Review maintenance records and recommend corrective actions to ensure reliability and compliance with applicable NERC standards
  • Develop, review, and maintain work instructions for reactive and preventive maintenance activities
  • Develop and maintain electrical troubleshooting guides for intelligent electronic device (IED) training
  • Conduct event analysis of protection system operations to determine misoperation status in support of meeting FERC or NERC requirements
  • Develop and submit NERC MIDAS reports
  • Develop structured feedback sessions for all lessons learned with project team to include misoperations, root cause analysis, and safety-related events
  • Review and maintain IED settings repository
  • Review and update project documentation
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance of NERC standards PRC-027 and validating and/or updating arc flash studies
  • Develop and implement site betterment projects including preparation of scope documents, exhibits, budgets, schedules, and requests for proposals
  • Interact closely with internal teams to ensure that project needs and objectives are met
  • Lead or participate to project meetings and conference calls
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on project plans, specifications, drawings, and documentation pertaining to renewable energy generation facilities

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • 5+ years of relevant technical experience
  • Expert knowledge of medium- and high-voltage substation electrical equipment including relay protection systems, collection systems, transmission designs, and operations
  • Experience with power generation or distribution event analysis preferred
  • Experience with establishing HV field service preferred
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office, Project software suites, and SEL Equipment
  • Experience with substation relay and protection system testing and troubleshooting
  • Experience with LOTO and OTO procedures
  • Familiarity with the operation of capacitor banks, transformer load tap changers, circuit breakers, and motor/manually operated air disconnect switches

Behavioral Requirements:

  • Ability to write operating procedures and strong problem-solving ability
  • Ability to apply pertinent industry standards and codes including Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of a valid driver's license
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to multi-task in a complex and dynamic environment
  • Ability to perform basic electrical mathematical calculations
  • Ability to read and understand plans, specifications, drawings, and documents relating to engineering and construction including one-line, three-line, schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Willingness and ability to travel at least 25% of the time
  • Ability and willingness to respond to site emergencies as needed

Physical demands & working conditions:

Sitting/Standing/Flexibility: Ability to frequently perform physical tasks including standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching approximately 75% of the time while on renewable power plants' sites.

Walking: Ability to walk .25 to 1.5 miles per day, including across unpaved and rough surfaces when on wind farm sites

Speech/Reading: Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form

Lifting: Ability to frequently lift items weighing up to 50 pounds and to occasionally jointly lift items weighing between 50 and 100 pounds

Equipment: Ability and willingness to operate aerial and tele handing equipment

Vision/Hearing: Ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form

Extreme Weather Conditions: Ability to work in adverse weather conditions 25% of the time while on wind farm sites

Safety: Ability to understand and communicate safety precautions when necessary
