Job Summary

The Sign Language Interpreter II role at Houston Community College is a critical position that requires exceptional communication skills and a deep understanding of Deaf culture. This position involves providing direct interpretation and supporting the provision of high-quality interpreting and transliterating services. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with department staff, faculty, and students to ensure seamless communication and effective collaboration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret and transliterate basic and higher-level academic classes, lectures, and student events, demonstrating a high level of receptive interpreting skills.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing notes, course outlines, and materials, as well as engaging with faculty, speakers, and students to ensure a thorough understanding of the subject matter.
  • Work closely with department staff, faculty, and college administrators to promote effective communication and collaboration.
  • Mentor and support other interpreters and interns, promoting professional development and growth within the team.
  • Engage in continuous professional development, maintaining and enhancing interpreting skills, developing specialized content expertise, and participating in continuing education opportunities.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree or four years of directly related work experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Hold Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) Certification Basic, Level II or Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification CI and CT.
  • Two years of experience working in a college or university setting, with a strong understanding of Deaf culture and the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
