Job Summary

Under the general supervision of a credentialed school nurse, perform a wide variety of nursing and specialized health care procedures with students. Provides instructional assistance to students as directed by an assigned school nurse, administrator, and classroom teacher.

Responsibilities
  • Perform specialized health care procedures for students following an Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP) developed by a credentialed school nurse.
  • Under supervision and according to established guidelines, provide basic assessment, prescribed treatment, and evaluation of students with diabetes.
  • Administer medications according to established guidelines.
  • Administer first aid and CPR as required.
  • Maintain medical records.
  • Assist disabled students in daily functioning, including but not limited to: feeding, toileting, exercise, and positioning.
  • Assist in student instruction using teacher-prepared plans.
  • Monitor student activities as assigned and under direction of a certificated employee.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with students and co-workers.
  • Maintain regular and prompt attendance.
Requirements
  • Current California Vocational Nurse License.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certificate.
  • Graduation from high school or its equivalent.
  • Valid California driver license.
  • Ability to effectively and positively relate to students with a wide range of disabilities, health needs, and communication challenges.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively, follow oral and written instructions, and work accurately and independently.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure with frequent interruptions and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and parents.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand and circulate.
  • Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation.
  • Ability to bend and twist, kneel and stoop.
  • Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to reach in all directions.
  • Physical dexterity in limbs and digits to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment.
