Job Overview

Position: Therapeutic Mentor

Department: Children's Services

ROLE SUMMARY

The Therapeutic Mentor is tasked with delivering structured, individualized interventions aimed at enhancing the behavioral health of youth and their families. This role is essential in helping young individuals navigate social environments, acquire new skills, and achieve meaningful progress in their personal development. The Therapeutic Mentor facilitates these interactions while guiding discussions on effective strategies for managing relationships with peers and adults.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide coaching and training to youth in appropriate social behaviors.
  • Guide youth in developing problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Connect youth with recreational and social opportunities.
  • Implement interventions to meet established treatment objectives as part of a collaborative service team.

  2. Complete all required certifications and training from the Department of Mental Health.
  3. Maintain compliance with program standards and protocols.

  • Introduce yourself to the youth and their primary caregiver, clarifying your role.

  • Establish a connection based on mutual respect and equality.
  • Exhibit active listening and empathetic responses to validate youth experiences.

Facilitate Skill Acquisition:

  • Address the youth's daily living, social, and communication needs.
  • Assist youth in navigating social contexts and making progress.
  • Teach developmentally appropriate behaviors and interpersonal skills.
  • Utilize structured, one-on-one support services to teach skills across various life domains.
  • Supervise practice sessions of new skills and engage youth in discussions about effective strategies.

Promote Respect in Relationships:

  • Communicate the importance of the youth's voice and experiences.
  • Identify and utilize the youth's strengths and family culture in support plans.
  • Demonstrate cultural humility in interactions.
  • Recognize unmet needs to foster understanding.
  • Encourage youth empowerment through reflection on their experiences.

Collaborate and Problem-Solve:

  • Establish partnerships through a non-adversarial advocacy approach.
  • Participate in team meetings as necessary.
  • Model a strength-based approach in collaborative problem-solving.
  • Leverage youth strengths in brainstorming solutions.
KEY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Implement all duties in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
  2. Ensure adherence to safety and health protocols while on duty.
  3. Meet productivity benchmarks as established.
  4. Maintain a manageable caseload while providing effective support.
  5. Collaborate with paraprofessionals and professional staff.
  6. Establish and uphold supportive relationships while maintaining professional boundaries.
  7. Ensure compliance with service provision standards.
  8. Maintain accurate and up-to-date client documentation.
  9. Attend required meetings and training sessions.
  10. Demonstrate ethical behavior and a positive attitude in all work assignments.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. with two years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in human services with one year of experience.
  2. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  3. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  4. Personal experience as a caregiver of a child with emotional or behavioral needs is essential.
  5. Completion of all required training within specified timeframes.
  6. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required.
  7. Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
