Job Summary:
Houston Methodist Academic Institute is seeking a highly skilled Research Nurse Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our research team, you will be responsible for supporting and coordinating clinical trial activities with minimal supervision. This role plays a critical part in the conduct of studies, ensuring seamless execution and compliance with regulatory standards.

About the Role:
The successful candidate will provide direct patient care effectively and efficiently under the supervision of the Clinical Trials Manager and Principal Investigator. You will implement clinical research patient care via the research protocol, working closely with physicians, patients, staff, and sponsors to ensure optimal patient safety and customer service. Additionally, you will serve as a liaison between these stakeholders, facilitating communication and resolving any issues that may arise. Your exceptional patient care skills, combined with your ability to navigate complex research protocols, make you an ideal candidate for this position.

Key Responsibilities:
- Utilize therapeutic communication, including active listening and teaching, to provide research interventions care to clinical research patients and coordinate with interprofessional teams as written in the research protocol.
- Provide patient education regarding disease processes and involve patients and families in decision-making processes, consistently evaluating patient comprehension and adapting teaching methods accordingly.
- Advocate on behalf of patients and families to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns, utilizing appropriate resources.
- Facilitate onboarding and orientation processes for new staff in conjunction with the Clinical Trials Manager, precepting new clinical research staff in a clinical setting.
- Use peer-to-peer accountability towards improvement of department scores for turnover/retention/employee engagement.
- Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple projects at different stages of the clinical research process (Phase 1-Phase 4).
- Coordinate pre-site and site initiation visits, training hospital and clinic nurses/physicians on scientific aspects and protocol requirements of research studies.
- Attend off-site investigator meetings and provide comprehensive nursing assessments to develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate activities associated with all phases of clinical research projects.
- Monitor the safety of all research subjects, reporting adverse events and practicing in a manner congruent with cultural diversity and inclusion principles.
- Help drive improvement of department scores for patient satisfaction through peer-to-peer accountability to service standards.
- Follow clinical research protocols and nursing processes, modifying care based on continuous evaluation of research patients' conditions. Perform nursing functions independently and in collaboration with Principal Investigators as approved by Hospital administration for the conduct of clinical research.
- Collect, process, and ship protocol-required lab specimens; maintain supply and equipment inventory; maintain appropriate laboratory certification, as well as perform study closeout procedures, including post-study documentation, return of study materials to the sponsor, and data archiving.
- Collaborate and prepare with Principal Investigators, Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), and regulatory documents for submission, assuring compliance with local and federal regulatory standards as appropriate and required by research protocols.
- Follow International Council for Harmonisation/Good Clinical Practice guidelines.
- Assist the financial analyst in developing calendars and Medicare Cost Analysis, standardizing care procedures versus research, and approving study calendars for the Clinical Trials Management System.
- Identify, recruit, and consent clinical research subjects for participation in approved clinical trials, monitoring enrollment goals and modifying strategies as necessary.
- Enter study-related data into the Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS) in accordance with Houston Methodist Research Institute policy.

Requirements:
This role requires a Bachelor's degree in Nursing or higher from an accredited school of nursing. A minimum of one year of acute care or clinical research experience is also necessary. Additionally, candidates must possess a Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure or Compact State Licensure within 60 days and/or Temporary State Licensure within 60 days. Basic Life Support (AHA) certification is also required.
