Medical Coder Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Medical Coder to join our team at Ophthalmology LTD. As a key member of our healthcare staff, you will be responsible for accurately coding clinical and outpatient medical records using ICD-10-CM and CPT codes.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coding and documentation expertise: Utilize extensive knowledge of official coding guidelines established by the AMA and CMS to assign accurate ICD-10 and CPT codes.
  • Reimbursement optimization: Evaluate medical record documentation to ensure diagnostic and procedural codes accurately reflect outpatient visits, thereby optimizing reimbursement.
  • Coding support: Respond to coding questions/issues and reimbursement inquiries from clinical staff and other departments as necessary.
  • Audits and recommendations: Perform scheduled audits of physician coding and documentation, providing recommendations for improvements and enhancements.
  • Authorization and coordination: Obtain authorizations prior to procedures or surgical services being performed.
  • Special projects: Assist department leadership with research, analysis, and other special projects.
  • Administrative tasks: Answer phone calls, direct calls to appropriate areas, and provide financial counseling to patients prior to medical services being performed.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; prefer post-secondary education in Health Information Management, accounting, or business.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of medical coding experience in a physician office setting or equivalent, with knowledge of various medical payer practices and insurance laws/guidelines (Medicare, Medicaid, Work Comp, VA, and other third-party payers). Ophthalmology coding and billing experience preferred.
  • Certification: Certification is encouraged (CPC-Certified Professional Coder, OCS-Ophthalmic Coding Specialist).

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Estimated Annual Salary: $65,000 - $85,000
