Job Summary

The Risk Manager is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the hospital's Risk Management function, ensuring that risks are identified and managed to reduce institutional liability and promote patient safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinates the collection of aggregate data from adverse event reports, claims, and loss prevention strategies to identify corrective and preventive actions.
  • Conducts investigations of sentinel events, unexpected outcomes, near misses, and peer reviews.
  • Develops and conducts continuing education programs for medical, nursing, and clinical support staff.
  • Manages the intake of adverse hospital and patient events and event reporting, reviewing all adverse event reports to ensure timely and appropriate analysis and follow-up.
  • Refers cases as directed to the CRICO for monitoring, investigation, or defense.
  • Assists in the review and development of hospital policies and participates in hospital patient safety initiatives and activities.
  • Keeps abreast of changing legislation, standards, and policies that affect risk management.
Requirements
  • Risk management experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Baccalaureate degree is required, with a degree in nursing or other healthcare degree preferred.
  • Advanced degree (JD, Masters) is preferred.
  • Experience in loss control and claims management is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical malpractice and healthcare law is preferred.
  • Experience in working with teams in a complex organization is required.
Working Conditions

The position is hybrid, with frequent use of a computer, telephone, and fax machine. Infrequent periods of high stress related to sentinel events, planned or unannounced surveys, and audits by external regulatory agencies may occur.

Responsiveness to multiple deadlines is essential. The role will require flexibility and open-mindedness as the position will actively evolve over time.
