School Nurse Specialist

The School Registered Nurse (RN) is a vital member of the educational team, responsible for providing direct nursing services to promote health, prevent illness, and support academic success. This role requires a strong foundation in nursing practice, with a focus on school health and education.
Key Responsibilities- Provides school nursing services to direct service school districts
- Assesses and evaluates the health and developmental status of students to make informed nursing diagnoses and establish priorities for action
- Interprets health and developmental status to school personnel, parents, and students as appropriate
- Serves as a health resource person in the health instruction curriculum and takes leadership in planning and implementing health education programs
- Provides parent education related to student needs
- Participates in the development of Health Plans and attends school conferences when applicable
- Provides care, delegates, and teaches care to others under the established plan of care, following the direction of a physician, nursing supervisor, school designee, and/or parent
- Attends continuing education programs as per licensure requirements and participates in Aveanna in-servicing and training as offered
- Exhibits behavior supporting and promoting student rights and overall well-being
- Follows Aveanna and school board policies and procedures affecting the health, safety, and well-being of students in the school health setting
- Reports changes in student mental, physical, or environmental condition (including incidents) to the physician, nursing supervisor, school designee, and parent as applicable
- Recognizes and reports signs of substance abuse, physical abuse, or neglect
- Provides a clean and safe environment within the school, including the safe use of equipment
- Identifies appropriate methods for storage of equipment, supplies, and medications
- Maintains and coordinates standards of nursing while managing a comprehensive school health program
- Provides preventive and rehabilitative measures while assisting/providing nursing assessments and screenings to promote safety and health for all
- Performs treatments and/or procedures with skill and competence
- Maintains and follows physician orders for any invasive procedure and/or skill
- Administers medication as per MD order and/or parental consent
- Provides individual teaching and training with students and/or others to encourage and promote student independence when applicable
- Collaborates, coordinates, and supervises services with others to promote academics and individualized student needs
- Accurately documents services provided in accordance with agency policies and procedures on the day the services are rendered
- Submits nursing documentation, logs, reports, and timesheets within a timely manner and per policy
- Graduate of an accredited Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate School of Nursing
- Current, unrestricted state license as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice
- Current CPR certification
- Current Basic Life Support certification
- Demonstrated proficiency in clinical assessments, documentation, and compliance with nursing care and policies and procedures
- Additional state-specific requirements: Continuing Education as required by state
- Pediatrics experience preferred
- Must be able to adhere to confidentiality standards and professional boundaries at all times

- Must be able to sufficiently reposition patients and move equipment without assistance
- Must be able to appropriately respond physically and mentally to emergency situations in the home or during transport
- Must be able to function in a wide variety of environments which may involve exposure to allergens and other various conditions
- Possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases
