Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Anesthesia Technician to join our team at Kaiser Permanente. As an Anesthesia Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of anesthesia care to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Anesthesia provider in preparing and maintaining anesthesia equipment and supplies.
  • Perform daily anesthesia machine checks and leak tests between cases.
  • Remove disposables from the OR at the end of each case.
  • Troubleshoot anesthesia equipment and physiological monitors.
  • Collaborate with the Anesthesia provider to develop individualized plans of care.
  • Prepare equipment for malignant hyperthermia when needed.
  • Assist with direct patient care, including insertion of difficult venapuncture, induction, fiberoptic intubation, and positioning patients for anesthesia blocks.
  • Manage work assignments to ensure completion of patient care activities.
  • Set up invasive monitoring equipment in routine and emergency situations.
  • Perform patient care activities within the scope of practice, considering age-related needs of the patient.
  • Assist with obtaining lab specimens and ABGs, picking up and delivering, awaiting results as indicated.
  • Coordinate patient monitoring and equipment availability with PACU and Critical Care units.
  • Work with the perioperative team to facilitate prompt OR turnover.
  • Assemble anesthesia equipment and supplies needed for general/regional anesthesia.
  • Prepare anesthesia procedure trays as requested.
  • Remove and dispose of all supplies and equipment, following procedures done by the Anesthesia provider.
  • Clean, sterilize, and decontaminate all non-disposable anesthesia-related items.
  • Perform terminal cleaning for all equipment, as scheduled and as needed.
  • Keep sufficient stock of supplies and non-scheduled drugs in the anesthesia workroom, machines, and carts.
  • Review for outdated medications.
  • Coordinate with Pharmacy for out-of-stock drugs.
  • Utilize working knowledge and operation of all equipment and monitors.
  • Perform routine checkout and upkeep of anesthesia monitoring equipment, as needed.
  • Inspect instruments and equipment for damage and send for repair or troubleshoot as needed.
  • Coordinate with Biomedical Engineering for maintenance and repair of anesthesia monitoring equipment, as needed.
  • Ensure adequate backup of monitoring equipment at all times.
  • Maintain record/documentation of equipment maintenance and repairs done in the department.
  • Maintain inventory of all disposable and non-disposable equipment, including all supplies and order as needed.
  • Maintain supply in emergency carts and boxes, such as code blue, malignant hyperthermia, fluid resuscitation/code purple, and fiberoptic/difficult airway.
  • Participate in evaluation and recommendations for new equipment.
  • Maintain working relationship with approved vendors.
  • Organize work to minimize the use of overtime. Identify and assist in systems improvements that need simplification or correction.
  • Utilize payroll and non-payroll resources to their maximum potential.
  • Participate with the assessment of current and future learning needs and development of an annual educational plan.
Basic Qualifications
  • Graduate of an ASATT-approved program in Anesthesia Technology with an AS degree or a minimum two (2) years of experience as a Certified Anesthesia Technician.
  • High School Diploma.
  • Basic EKG certificate/course, preferred.
  • Certified with the American Society of Technologists and Technicians (ASATT), as a Technologist or Technician.
  • Valid BLS Provider Card.
  • Certificate of training for Drager or GE Anesthesia systems, or other Anesthesia delivery systems, preferred.
  • Valid ACLS Provider Card, preferred.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in the use of anesthesia equipment, including trouble shooting.
  • Working knowledge of Anesthesia department procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles of asepsis.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the duties and responsibilities required of a Certified Anesthesia Technician.
  • Able to demonstrate manual dexterity and mechanical ability.
  • Must be able to lift 45 lbs equipment from an overhead position on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to push/pull up to 500 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand or walk continuously.
  • Must be able to exercise judgment and work efficiently and competently with minimal supervision.
  • Utilizes effective communication strategies, which result in intended outcomes.
  • Keyboarding skills Upon training, must be able to use appropriate computer software applications, including the Health Connect system.
Notes
  • This is an on-call position, days and hours may vary.
  • Travel 75% of the time in the Downey Service area.
  • Rotate weekends.
