Nurse Educator

We are seeking a highly skilled Nurse Educator to join our team at Bethesda Health. As a key member of our long-term care team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive education programs for nursing staff, emphasizing infection control and safety protocols.
About the RoleThis is a challenging yet rewarding role that requires strong clinical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage time effectively. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Nursing to ensure effective staff development and compliance with healthcare regulations.
Responsibilities- Develop and implement corporate-approved orientation programs for all employees, emphasizing regulatory issues surrounding long-term care and promoting a culture of quality care.
- Conduct general orientation using corporate guidelines, incorporating relevant OSHA and Federal and State regulations into the program.
- Incorporate staff and resident safety into the program, including emergency preparedness, fire safety, security, injury prevention, and teaching programs for staff dealing directly and indirectly with Alzheimer's residents.
- Coordinate and monitor orientation activities throughout the program.
- Provide input into the evaluation of orientees and recommend release from or extension of orientation based on learning needs.
- Assist with mentor programs and promote a culture of staff development by being open and encouraging about the work environment.
- Develop lesson plans and conduct in-service programs, including mandatory in-services, new and revised policies and procedures, and other programs identified by staff needs assessment, state surveys, introduction of new products, services, and technology.
- Teach staff basic computer skills as related to their job duties and instruct them how to access and use online education programs as part of the overall in-service education program.
- Work closely with the Director of Nursing (DON) particularly in the promotion of teamwork and quality care issues.
- Provide input into the appraisal process of staff, particularly during orientation.
- Act as a resource for managers relative to department orientation, in-service, and staff development needs.
- As requested, conduct the state-approved Nurse Assistant Training Program or CMT program using directions set forth in state regulations.
- Classes are organized, students are monitored, and an acceptable fail/pass ratio is achieved.
- Act as a resource person for nurse assistants and monitor their progress.
- Develop and implement an ongoing infection prevention and control program to prevent, recognize, and control the onset and spread of infections in order to provide a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment.
- Establish facility-wide systems for the prevention, identification, reporting, investigation, and control of infections and communicable diseases of residents, staff, and visitors.
- Develop and implement written policies and procedures in accordance with current standards of practice and recognized guidelines for infection prevention and control.
- Oversee the facility's antibiotic stewardship program.
- Oversee resident care activities that increase risk of infection, such as urinary catheter use and care, wound care, incontinence care, skin care, point-of-care blood testing, and medication injections.
- Lead the facility's Infection and Prevention Control Committee.
- Develop action plans to address opportunities for improvement.
- Participate on the facility's QAA Committee.
- Implement an annual infection control risk assessment process and participate in the facility's annual assessment review process.
- Review and/or revise the facility's infection prevention and control program, its standards, policies, and procedures annually and as needed for changes to the facility assessment to ensure they are effective and in accordance with current standards of practice for preventing and controlling infections.
- Provide education to staff, residents, and families (where appropriate).
- Ensure public health is notified of reportable diseases.
- Collaborate with other departments in fulfilling requirements related to occupational health and safety (i.e., employee health).
- Maintain documentation of infection prevention and control program activities.
- Inform the DON of individual needs of the Staff Development functions as it relates to budgeting.
- Assist the DON in the assessment of needs for resident care equipment during budget preparation.
- Aware of and promotes the compliance program throughout the facility.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement (QAPI) activities established by the organization by looking at all resident care processes with an intent to identify areas for improvement.
- Prepare concise and timely QAPI reports, as required.
- Develop educational programs based on needs identified through QAPI activities, attend various meetings, and provide reports as requested.
- Attend local professional educator's meetings and Bethesda monthly meetings.
- Set individual goals and reviews with the DON.
- Serves as a role model to the staff.
- Actively pursues education related to the job.
- Keeps current in nursing issues (geriatrics, management, legislative).
