Operational Specialist

We are seeking an Operational Specialist to join our team at the Orthopedic Surgical Center of the North Shore. This is a full-time position that offers excellent growth and advancement opportunities in a dynamic environment.
About the Role:
- Assist the RN in implementing a care plan for patients in the Operating Room.
- Perform scrub duties under the supervision of the RN, maintaining strict Aseptic Technique.
- Anticipate surgeons' needs and provide instruments, supplies, and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Organize and maintain instrumentation and supplies, ensuring patient safety in all aspects of job activities.
- Monitor the use of counted items (sponges and sharps), assist the circulating nurse in counting, and alert the nurse to any discrepancies.
- Follow standard precautions and infection control policies.
- Set up the OR Room before each case, wiping down surfaces, assembling and checking equipment for proper functioning and availability.
- Open supplies for procedures using strict aseptic technique.
- Assist in positioning patients and transporting them to the OR, ensuring their comfort.
- Assist in cleaning and turning over the room, including bringing the table down to the decontamination room.
- Break down tables and check inventory and equipment, reporting shortages and defective equipment to the appropriate personnel.
- Perform proper decontamination and processing of instrumentation for sterilization following AAMI standards.
- Prepare supplies and equipment for procedures, stocking wall closet supplies and warming closets.
- Check case carts, pull case carts for the next day's procedure, and copy daily schedules to distribute.
- Obtain drugs from the Anesthesia workroom and prepare the procedure room for the day with necessary supplies and equipment.
- Maintain and monitor supplies to ensure availability, assisting in transporting patients and ensuring a safe patient environment.
- Interact with patients, ensuring their comfort, and assist with different procedures, such as radiofrequency.
- Have working knowledge of medications used by physicians and turn rooms over after cases, preparing for the next procedure.
- Clean and stock Anesthesia Carts when necessary, maintaining supplies places, receiving orders, and putting stock away.
- In the absence of the Lead Tech, interact with sales personnel regarding supplies, maintain equipment, send out for repair or exchange, file booking sheets, and ensure necessary supplies and equipment are available for cases one week in advance.
- Decontaminate instruments and equipment, sterilizing according to manufacturers' guidelines and AAMI standards.
- Wrap instruments and fold towels, clean stretchers, and make them up with fresh linens.
- Assist the PACU Scheduling Coordinator by putting charts together and affixing stickers.
- May be asked to help prepare the wet lab for demonstrations, ensuring equipment and supplies needed are available and in good working order.
- Use Universal/Standard Precautions when handling demo room specimens and instrumentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
About You:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; graduate of an approved surgical technologist certification program preferred.
- One to three years of operating room experience, preferably in an ambulatory surgical center; orthopedics experience required.
- Working knowledge of office equipment and software, familiarity with HIPAA, insurance regulations, policies, procedures, and other regulatory policies.
- Medical office procedures, policies, practices, and medical terminology, telephone protocol, and professional etiquette.
- Understanding of electronic medical systems, excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability and interest in learning procedures and software functionalities to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
- Organized, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task, interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures appropriately.
- Develop and maintain effective and professional working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers, and the public, demonstrating empathy and tact.
- Promote teamwork through collaboration, represent the practice in a professional manner, and maintain strict confidentiality on all patient issues.
