Job Title: Health and Safety Specialist

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Health and Safety Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Environmental Health and Safety department, you will play a critical role in promoting a safe and healthy work environment for our employees and the public.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Administer ergonomic-related programming, including assessment of computer workstations and laboratory functions, provision of ergonomic assessment reports, creation and maintenance of ergonomics training, and administration of ergonomic software programs.
  • Assist in occupational health and safety-related programming, including collection of environmental samples, performance of occupational exposure monitoring, and response to indoor air quality and odor concerns.
  • Recordkeeping and maintenance of air and noise sampling equipment, including calibration and repair as needed.
  • Share in the responsibility of responding to after-hours emergencies and be available for on-call periods.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in health, science, or engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with applicable ergonomic and health and safety regulations, professional health and safety consensus guidelines, and University policies.
  • Valid, un-restricted driver's license and compliance with the Health System's immunization policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1-2 years of relevant work experience in the sciences or engineering, with additional training in ergonomics, occupational health and safety, safety engineering, or other applicable technical fields.
Working Conditions:

This position requires entering offices, research laboratories, outdoor facilities, vivaria, clinical and patient care areas, construction sites, and other areas where hazardous materials, loud noise, non-ionizing energy fields, and potentially harmful equipment may exist.
