Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Health Technician (Ophthalmology) to join our team at the Veterans Health Administration. As an Advanced Level Health Technician, you will play a critical role in supporting ophthalmologists in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of eye disorders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced ophthalmic technical duties, including refractometry, kinetic visual field testing, and intraocular pressure measurements.
  • Conduct pupil evaluation, recording pupil size, shape, symmetry, reaction to light, and accommodation.
  • Assist in ophthalmic surgical procedures, including laser surgery and intravitreal injections.
  • Perform slit lamp bio-microscopy evaluation, A-scan ultrasonography, and B-scan ultrasonography.
  • Measure eyeglass prescriptions using manual lensometer and record sphere, cylinder, axis, and prism in both plus and minus cylinder.
  • Assist in minor clinical surgical procedures, including setup of sterile fields and operation of phacoemulsification and vitrectomy units.
  • Train other health technicians (ophthalmology) and perform thorough preparatory cleaning of critical reusable medical equipment.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Health Technicians (Ophthalmology) must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 38 U.S.C. 7407(d).
  • Experience and/or Education: One year of experience in a health care field, such as nursing, medical assistant, or health technician, or two years above high school with a minimum of six semester hours directly related to a health care field or associate's degree in a health care related degree.
  • Certification: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) with the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
Working Conditions

This is a full-time position with a work schedule of Monday - Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, subject to change based on needs of the facility. Telework is not available for this position.
