Job Summary

Under the direction of the manager and the medical director, the staff sonographer qualified by professional credentialing, academic and clinical experience provides diagnostic patient care services using diagnostic medical sonography.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify patients by using two patient demographic identifiers and review physician orders for the procedure to be performed.
  • Perform all Ultrasound procedures using independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathological findings.
  • Analyze sonograms, synthesizing sonographic information and medical history, and communicate findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Ensure imaging quality meets quality control standards and stay abreast of organizational, affiliate, and departmental changes/updates.
  • Provide excellent customer service, explaining procedures to patients, and maintaining a sanitary and organized environment.
  • Comply with departmental downtime protocols, charge procedures and supplies, and troubleshoot improper charges.
  • Maintain ethical standards of relationships and communications, and assure the relieving shift has received hand-off communication about patients.
  • Operate the PACS system appropriately, verify studies before sending to be read, and assure all appropriate consents are signed.
  • Familiarize self with and comply with HIPAA mandates, follow Prisma Health guidelines, and maintain a pleasant, helpful attitude during all phone communications.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations, monitor conditions in the department, and notify appropriate persons in regards to unsafe conditions.
  • Mentor newly hired sonographers, instruct sonography students, and participate in supervision of students/volunteers assigned to the sonography department.

Requirements

  • Completion of a radiology program or sonography program from an accredited institution.
  • Credentialed Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
  • BLS certification.
  • Basic computer skills, knowledge of office equipment, data entry, mathematical skills, and patient equipment knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ARRT in Radiology.
  • PACS experience.
  • EMR experience.
