Job Summary:

Serves as a member of the open-heart surgical team, operating the heart-lung machine to maintain homeostasis, anticoagulation, and acid-base balance during procedures.

Works under the direction of cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, or physicians while in surgery, receiving supervision and assignments from the Director of Perfusion and Autotransfusion.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Operates and maintains perfusion equipment, heart-lung machines, autotransfusion equipment, and other devices.
  • Ensures adequate myocardial protection, delivering safe and effective perfusion while keeping surgeons informed of current status.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and ensures safety precautions are taken.
  • Understands, performs, and maintains proper anticoagulation and reversal of anticoagulation.
  • Monitors and maintains aspects of adequate perfusion, including blood gases, electrolyte levels, hematocrits, urine output, blood pressure, cerebral perfusion, and anesthesia.

Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited program of Perfusion Education, B.S or M.S.
  • Certified or board eligible for Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • Licensure by MA Board of Registration of Perfusionists.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work under stressful situations.
