Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant General Counsel to join our team at Suffolk County Sheriffs Department. The successful candidate will provide legal support and guidance to the General Counsel and other departmental staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Represent the department in contract and procurement issues, researching legal topics and preparing memoranda as assigned.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to interns, paralegals, and administrative staff.
  • Review, draft, and compile documents for departmental contract and procurement needs.
  • Assist in the review, drafting, and compilation of departmental policies.
  • Research and draft legal memoranda on legal issues relating to the department.
  • Manage FOIA requests and investigate incidents/issues as assigned.
  • Comply with all written policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • Admission to the Massachusetts and Federal Bar is required.
  • Prior experience with contract law and regulations is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Commonwealth procurement policies and procedures is preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to interact with employees and the public in a pleasant and discreet manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • High levels of customer service, independence, leadership, and willingness to write and maintain documentation.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and work with co-workers and consultants.
  • Self-motivator with ability to meet project deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and complete moderate to complex level of qualitative and quantitative analyses.
Working Conditions
  • Drafts RFRs for all departmental procurement needs.
  • Mitigates and manages any legal issues arising from performance of procurement projects.
  • Advises on, prepares, and responds to legal questions regarding all contract and procurement matters.
  • Assists, prepares, and participates with Financial Services staff for internal and governmental audits.
  • Manages, drafts, responds, and produces responsive documents to FOIA requests.
  • Works with Commonwealth and Secretary of State on department document retention/destruction functions.
  • Maintains good standing in Massachusetts and Federal Bar.
  • Regular, punctual, and predictable attendance at assigned workplace.
  • Knowledge of, compliance with, and enforcement of department and General Counsel Division policies and procedures.
  • Compliance with security procedures.
  • Obeying moderately complex oral and written orders.
  • Effective communication orally and in writing.
  • Dealing calmly and effectively with stressful situations, including emergencies.
  • Exercising good judgment.
Additional Functions of Position

Participation in mandatory training.
