Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Laboratory Specialist to join our team at ProMedica Health System. In this role, you will be responsible for performing testing, maintaining established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, and complying with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Process biological specimens for analysis
  • Evaluate and solve problems related to specimen collection and processing
  • Operate instruments and perform procedures within the scope of training
  • Recognize equipment malfunctions and act according to established protocols

Quality Control:

  • Perform, record, and maintain accurate quality control records
  • Act as a liaison and foster effective communication between laboratory and healthcare team, maintaining patient confidentiality

Computer System:

  • Perform routine inquiry and data input on the laboratory computer systems
  • Ensure accuracy of information in the computer systems and be responsible for corrective actions

Training/Competency Assessment:

  • Instruct new associates and students as required
  • Must complete required number of CE units

Requirements:

  • Doctoral, Master's or Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution
  • Transcripts showing 60 semester hours from an accredited institution indicating 24 semester hours of medical technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours in chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination
  • Meet an alternate qualification route for Testing Personnel for High Complexity Testing as detailed in §493

Certification:

  • American Society of Pathology (ASCP) MLS or Categorical eligible at time of hire with certification achieved within one year of hire

Working Conditions:

  • Lab Coat, Gloves, Protective Eyewear, as required
  • Must be able to move continuously about hospital and between workstations
  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to disease-bearing specimens, odorous chemicals, carcinogens, mutagens, low-level radiation, electrical hazards, and flammable liquids
