Space Telescope Science Institute - Astronomical Software Developer Position

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic software engineer to join our team at the Space Telescope Science Institute. Our mission is to support NASA missions by developing cutting-edge software tools for astronomy.

About the Role

This role involves working on an Agile team to develop software for the SPIKE system, a Lisp-based tool used for planning and scheduling Hubble Space Telescope, JWST, and Roman observations.

You will work with diverse stakeholders to develop software requirements, design and code new capabilities, and maintain existing ones. Additionally, you will develop graphical tools for displaying planning and scheduling data using Java, JavaScript, and other tools.

Responsibilities
  • Work with stakeholders to define software requirements
  • Design, code, and test new software capabilities
  • Maintain existing software capabilities
  • Develop graphical tools for data display
  • Utilize software tools such as Git, Docker, and GitLab
Requirements and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need a BS/BA in Computer Science or a related field, along with 0-3 years of software development experience. You should have experience with object-oriented languages, computational problem-solving, shell scripting, SQL databases, and distributed version control systems like Git.

Additionally, you should possess excellent communication and collaboration skills, as well as strong problem-solving and debugging abilities.
