Cultivate Excellence in Horticulture Leadership

We are seeking a visionary leader to serve as the Director of Horticulture and Living Collections at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. This esteemed position oversees all aspects of our Horticulture Department, including botanical collections, garden design, research, and conservation priorities.
As a seasoned horticulture professional with expertise in arid landscapes and desert ecology, you will provide leadership to staff and volunteers on the development of plant collections and departmental priorities. Your passion for desert landscapes and wildlife is essential in driving innovation and excellence in our organization.
This full-time exempt position reports directly to the Executive Director and supervises a team of 12+ horticulture staff members. You will be responsible for managing the Horticulture Department budget, participating in fund-raising and grant-writing activities, and overseeing the day-to-day activities of your team.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement strategic growth plans for the Horticulture Department, aligning with the arboretum's mission and goals.
- Provide direction to Horticulture staff in the development of programs that support the arboretum's mission and goals, including collection planning and setting research and propagation priorities.
- Manage and oversee the Horticulture Department budget, including reporting of grant and donor-restricted funds.
- Participate in fund-raising and grant-writing activities to benefit Horticulture programs.
- Directly supervise and provide leadership, management, and oversight for the day-to-day activities of the Horticulture staff, including hiring, training, goal setting, and appraisals/reviews.
To be successful in this role, you will require:
- A Bachelor's degree in botany, horticulture, environmental studies, or a related field, with a Master's degree preferred.
- A minimum of three (3) years managing and supervising horticultural staff in working with living collections in a public garden environment.
- Demonstrated experience in arid and desert plant ecology and landscapes.
- Demonstrated knowledge of horticulture and public garden best practices, as well as a clear understanding of aesthetics as they apply to a natural setting.
