Job Summary:

The State of Oregon is seeking a highly skilled Air Quality Permit Writer and Inspector to join our team at the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. As a key member of our Northwest Region office in Portland, you will play a critical role in ensuring the protection and improvement of Oregon's environmental quality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receive and investigate pollution complaints, providing technical assistance and support to the public and regulated entities.
  • Conduct on-site inspections and process permits for industrial, commercial, and municipal air quality sources.
  • Recommend enforcement actions to the Northwest Region Air Quality Program Manager when violations of statutes, permits, or rules are observed and documented.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, stakeholders, and the public to advance our agency's mission and goals.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in physical science, environmental science, natural resources, or a closely related field.
  • 2 years of experience in a natural resource or environmental field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, concise, and compelling communication of policy and technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Experience and knowledge in industrial source operations, compliance inspection methods, and air quality permitting.
  • Ability to work diplomatically with upset or adversarial individuals in person and on the phone.

Working Conditions:

This position requires occasional travel for fieldwork, assessments, compliance work, meetings, trainings, conferences, and public hearings. You will have access to a workspace at DEQ sites, but it may be shared with other employees. You will also be eligible for hybrid work arrangements, with the logistics to be determined with the Hiring Manager prior to your hire.

This is a full-time, AFSCME represented position. The successful candidate will be required to work in a dynamic and supportive team environment, with a focus on maintaining, restoring, and enhancing the quality of Oregon's air, land, and water.
