Job Summary

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking a highly skilled Veterinary Technician I to join our team. As a key member of our veterinary hospital, you will provide technical and paramedical support to patients under the general direction of faculty clinicians and higher-level technicians.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide skilled technical and paramedical support to patients, including restraint, collection and submission of samples, administration of medications, and conducting diagnostic tests.
  • Assist in hospitalizing patients for diagnostic work-up and medical treatment, and prepare for and assist in special medical procedures such as endoscopy, bone marrow biopsies, and joint taps.
  • Maintain medical records and enter charges for medical services rendered, and ensure assigned work areas are appropriately stocked, cleaned, and equipment is in working order.
  • Order replacement or new equipment and supplies as directed by the service head, and properly clean, sterilize, and maintain pertinent advanced diagnostic equipment.
  • Answer questions from potential clients, referring veterinarians, and VTH staff concerning treatments or diagnostic work-ups that are available.
  • Provide instruction and evaluation of veterinary technician students, and assist in teaching laboratories by selecting and setting out equipment needed and assisting directly in teaching technical skills to veterinary students.
Requirements
  • Successful completion of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
  • Current certification as a Veterinary Technician by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
  • One (1) year (12 months) of paramedical veterinary experience comparable to that performed at the Veterinary Technician (General) level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility.
Working Conditions

The handling of any animal presents some element of risk or injury. Some strength and considerable caution are required when working with animals during diagnostic or surgical procedures. This position entails operating equipment, administering medications, and restraining animals of various species for examination.
