As a key member of the Instrument Development and Automation Laboratory team at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining cutting-edge software and hardware tools for the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) and PNNL.

The team has significant experience with state-of-the-art instruments, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers. Your role will involve close collaboration with scientists who use NMR capabilities for their research.

  • Conduct research and development activities, including standard technical procedures, under technical supervision.
  • Operate in laboratory workspaces equipped with fume hoods, glove boxes, and specialized instrumentation.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot NMR and helium liquefier systems, perform minor repairs and modifications.
  • Operate and monitor helium liquefiers.
  • Fill and manage liquid helium and nitrogen (cryogen) supplies.
  • Manage cryogen orders, storage, and documentation.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and best practices.
  • Collaborate with scientists and vendors to resolve instrument issues.
  • Communicate with internal scientists regarding fill schedules, maintenance, and repair progress.
  • Document work instructions and issue resolutions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED and 8 years of relevant experience, or technical institute graduate/relevant AA degree and 6 years of relevant experience, or BS/BA or higher in science or engineering and 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Preferred qualifications include experience with electronic systems, complex mechanical systems, and basic component parts and concepts.

Working Conditions

Required exposure to magnetic fields up to 3 Tesla (30K Gauss) and work with cryogens (liquid nitrogen and helium).
