Job Overview

Position Summary:
Responsible for conducting thorough investigations into potential financial misconduct and fraudulent activities. Employs various systems and investigative methodologies to gather, organize, and assess financial and background data, making informed decisions regarding customer account management. Identifies and evaluates high-risk accounts, potential matches on watch lists, and other suspicious account behaviors. Analyzes information to determine when cases should be escalated to law enforcement or legal authorities for further action. Implements measures to mitigate data or financial losses by reviewing internal controls and procedures related to financial misconduct and fraud cases. Provides guidance and oversight to junior team members.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts detailed investigations into suspected financial misconduct and fraud. Utilizes analytical techniques to evaluate data sets and make well-supported recommendations for reporting to relevant authorities.
  • Leverages knowledge of banking systems and processes to inform investigations. Develops action plans, gathers evidence, and compiles findings for multiple case assignments. Prepares comprehensive documentation and final reports of investigations.
  • Records all investigative activities and detailed notes in the case management system promptly to ensure a complete overview of each investigation. Calculates total attempted fraud and confirmed loss amounts for all cases.
  • Engages with customers, employees, and suspects to gather information. Traces financial transactions and reviews the profiles of individuals under suspicion. Collaborates with management to determine the appropriate closure or recovery actions for cases.
  • Communicates with branch personnel to obtain additional information necessary for supporting documentation and risk mitigation efforts. Assists in conducting customer interviews as needed.
  • Escalates cases to relevant departments based on the specifics of each case. Compiles confidential documentation for referral to security teams when law enforcement involvement is necessary. Prepares Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) for compliance review.
  • Evaluates internal controls and procedures related to assigned cases, identifying weaknesses and recommending improvements to prevent future incidents. Assists in developing new procedures for fraud detection and investigation.
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation for review and audit purposes. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and identifies any procedural issues. Safeguards sensitive information related to investigations.
  • Each team member is expected to be vigilant regarding risks within their area of responsibility, adhering to all relevant policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: Minimum of five years in fraud or financial crime investigations, including transaction monitoring and analysis of suspicious activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of federal and state laws related to financial crimes.
  • Familiarity with various fraud categories and types.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of banking operations and policies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience in a large banking or financial services environment.
