Job Description / Essential Elements

Licensed Vocational Nurse

Under the supervision of the credentialed school nurse, the Licensed Vocational Nurse will perform specialized health services for students in regular education and special education programs. This includes communicating with parents, school site, and District personnel on health-related matters, assisting with medical screening of students, disseminating health information, and providing appropriate medical care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform specialized health procedures for students, including toileting assistance, catheterization, gavage feeding, ostomy care, suctioning, and medications.
  • Provide emergency medical care in the event of serious illness or accident.
  • Assist in providing appropriate health instruction to students, school staff, and parents.
  • Maintain school health records.
  • Coordinate necessary health conferences with parents, staff, and community resources.
  • Coordinate services with the medical community for students' medical, health, and educational needs.
  • Prepare reports for District, county, and State agencies.
  • Order and maintain supplies for the school health office.
  • Assist and maintain a neat, clean, and orderly health office.
  • Provide support and act as a resource for all schools and District staff.
  • Administer medication, including insulin, as appropriate and pursuant to physician's instructions.
  • Assist students in developing self-control and self-esteem.
  • Plan and organize health clinics and assist in the development of health-related newsletters for students, staff, parents, and community.
  • Maintain professional competence through continuing education coursework or experience.
  • Participate in the coordination of services pursuant to Individualized Education Programs (IEP), 504 Plans, Student Success Team Plans (SST), and other intervention plans.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of correct and appropriate medical procedures.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical treatment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of health and medical needs of general education and special education students.
  • Knowledge of specialized health procedures for medically fragile students and severely handicapped students.
  • Motivational and self-esteem development techniques for students.
  • General goals of special education in the public schools.
  • Electronic record keeping; confidentiality laws relating to student records.
  • Clinical and health office apparatus.
  • Laws and codes related to the administration of health services.
  • Community health resources.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma and successful completion of a Licensed Vocational Nurse Program are required.
  • Nursing experience in a hospital, clinic, or school environment dealing with school-age children is highly desirable.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Possession of a Licensed Vocational Nurse Certificate.
