Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Cafeteria Helper at the Stanislaus Union School District. As a key member of our food service team, you will play a vital role in preparing and packaging school lunches for distribution within the district.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of vegetables and other foods for cooking, ensuring that all ingredients are fresh and of high quality.
  • Store food and kitchen-related items in a clean and organized manner, adhering to strict health and safety protocols.
  • Scrape and wash dishes, utensils, and trays, maintaining a high level of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Clean serving counters, preparation areas, food containers, and other equipment, ensuring that all surfaces are sanitized and free of debris.
  • Operate the automatic dishwasher and wash trays, plates, utensils, and other serving equipment, maintaining a high level of efficiency and productivity.
  • Clean and store kitchen equipment, adhering to manufacturer instructions and maintaining a high level of cleanliness.
  • Assist in maintaining the food service facility in a safe, clean, and sanitary condition, including the preparation and serving area, as well as the student tables.
  • Heat, set up, and serve food to students and faculty, ensuring that all meals are prepared to a high standard and presented in a visually appealing manner.
  • Check for proper food temperature, as applicable to transport, during preparation and on the serving line, ensuring that all food is served at a safe temperature.
  • Handle and dispose of refuse, using proper techniques and adhering to guidelines, maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
  • Set up the steam table and serving line, ensuring that all equipment is clean and in good working order.
  • Assist in the serving and distribution of food, ensuring that all meals are delivered to students and faculty in a timely and efficient manner.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, and techniques of cooking and baking in large quantities.
  • Basic methods of preparing and serving food in large quantities.
  • Standard food service appliances and equipment.
  • Basic mathematical concepts.
  • Personal and institutional hygiene.
  • General sanitation and safety procedures.
  • Ability to skillfully cook and bake.
  • Adhere to large quantity food production and preparation standards.
  • Correctly apply appropriate nutrition guidelines, dietary requirements, and alternative food sources.
  • Lift and transport foodstuffs, materials, and supplies.
  • Accurately complete daily transport sheets.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, co-workers, and faculty.
  • Operate a variety of food service equipment.
  • Work quickly and efficiently.
Working Conditions

The physical requirements of this position include exerting 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This type of work involves constant movement within the work area and will involve walking or standing for extended periods most of the time.

Perceiving the nature of sounds, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business-related equipment, and handling and working with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

Education and Experience

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:

  • Education: Twelfth grade diploma or the equivalent.
  • Experience: Responsible experience in quantity baking and/or cooking in a food service facility, whether commercial, institutional, or school food service facility.
  • Some experience preferred but not required.

Possession of a valid California driver's license and ServSafe certification are also required.

Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier and employment contingent upon fingerprint and background clearance, proof of a recent negative tuberculosis test result, and Department of Motor Vehicles clearance are also required.
