Animal Welfare Specialist

Daybreak Foods is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Animal Caretaker to join our team. This role is responsible for ensuring the welfare and environment of the chickens, adhering to industry animal welfare practices and procedures.

The Animal Caretaker will monitor and report the conditions of the barns where the birds reside, ensuring a safe and productive environment. They will also perform light maintenance on facilities and equipment, including:

• Ensuring the security of chickens and the premises by keeping all facility doors locked
• Documenting completed tasks on a daily and weekly basis
• Observing bird health and proper supply of feed, light, air, and water daily
• Properly collecting and disposing of mortality
• Placing chickens back into the system when the lights turn off
• Walking rows of chickens and checking egg lines for blockages
• Observing and completing daily cleaning of manure belt equipment
• Sweeping and cleaning different areas of the poultry houses
• Maintaining and monitoring ventilation systems to ensure proper ventilation in the chicken houses
• Safely operating required equipment and tools
• FOLLOWING ALL COMPANY SAFETY POLICIES AND PRACTICES
• Demonstrating an understanding of laying hen husbandry
• Comprehending and operating automated environmental and egg flow computers
• Continuously monitoring bird health and production of laying hens in houses, reporting findings to Production Manager/Supervisor
• Performing tasks associated with moving birds in and out of houses, including handling bird-moving equipment and cleaning with pneumatic or pressurized water
• Monitoring bird service activities, i.e., birds in/out, with an emphasis on animal welfare
• FOLLOWING ALL COMPANY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

To be successful in this role, you must have:

• A high school diploma, GED, or equivalency preferred
• 1 year of experience in an agricultural environment and animal care preferred
• Be self-directed and organized
• Ability to track and document all activities with correct forms and paperwork
• Strong communication skills to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing
• Working knowledge of agricultural operations preferred
• Detail-oriented
• Ability to interact with individuals from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
• Record of good attendance with a flexible schedule
• BASIC READING, WRITING, AND MATH SKILLS
• A positive attitude and ability to work with a team
• MUST ENJOY WORKING IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH ANIMALS

The starting rate for this position is $17.33 per hour, with incremental increases earned through developing skills and qualifications. Additionally, there may be potential bonuses available, please ask the Human Resources Representative for more information.
