Medical Laboratory Assistant

About the Role:
The Medical Lab Assistant will play a critical role in the laboratory, responsible for the receipt, processing, and storage of various specimens. This includes electronic receipt in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)/Electronic Medical Record (EMR), centrifugation, separation, refrigeration, labeling, storage, and distribution of samples.
This position provides support to the technical staff, performing non-technical tasks and CLIA waived and moderately complex testing, as approved by the Lab Manager. Responsibilities also include assisting with inventory control for various laboratory departments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive and process specimens, ensuring accurate identification and handling.
- Determine specimen suitability and reject specimens as necessary.
- Order, receive, and store testing supplies.
- Perform instrument maintenance and calibration.
- Conduct waived and moderately complex testing using manual and automated methods.
- Verify instrument and method performance using quality control materials and processes.
- Verify LIS and instrument interface functionality.
- Perform proficiency testing.
- Detect and troubleshoot problems with instruments and methods.
- Validate and verify testing results, detecting aberrant results and re-testing as necessary.
- Analyze control specimens, record results, and determine reportability of results.
- Report testing results in the Laboratory Information System.
- Provide timely notification of critical and abnormal results, as per protocol.
- Perform quality assurance, including selection of method and evaluation of results.
- Prepare and issue blood products for routine transfusion.
- Maintain confidentiality of privileged department and patient information.
- Adhere to established safety procedures and policies.
- Maintain and update knowledge and skills of laboratory medicine.
- Perform other duties as assigned by laboratory leadership.
- Train and/or orient new Medical Laboratory Assistants.
- Maintain knowledge of departmental and MultiCare policies and procedures.
Requirements:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- One year recent laboratory experience within the past 2 years, including specimen processing and laboratory computer functions.
