Job Summary

South Weber City is seeking a highly skilled Firefighter/Paramedic to join our team. As a Firefighter/Paramedic, you will be responsible for providing direct services in response to fire, rescue, hazmat, and other incidents. You will also provide pre-hospital advanced life support care to victims of injury or illness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform complex diagnostic and medical procedures, including intravenous cannulation, endotracheal intubation, and administration of various medications.
  • Drive and operate ambulance or other apparatus as assigned, and/or operate as a member of a paramedic engine or paramedic truck company.
  • Accurately complete written and verbal reports on patient care to hospital emergency departments.
  • Perform a thorough, daily inspection of the apparatus to which you are assigned, and notify the station officer of any condition requiring repair or maintenance.
  • Comprehend and document complete and accurate patient histories.
  • Check medications and equipment daily to ensure proper control and inventory.
  • Participate in firefighting duties, including laying hose lines, operating nozzles, pumps, and hydrants, and utilizing fire extinguishers.
  • Participate in salvage operations and post-fire operations, using salvage covers, floor runners, and other related equipment to reduce property damage.
  • Participate in drills and training evolutions as directed.
  • Participate in fire and life safety inspections of commercial and residential properties, and check the operating condition of hydrants.
  • Clean and perform general maintenance of fire equipment and fire stations.
  • Respond to scenes of accidents or acute illness for which emergency medical care has been requested.
  • Transfer, lift, and move patients while employing appropriate safety and lifting techniques.
  • Respond to hazardous materials incidents at an awareness level, and respond to other calls for assistance as requested by the public.
  • Participate in public education programs in schools, civic groups, and other locations as requested.
  • Conduct departmental training sessions on topics related to your job functions.
  • Utilize city computers for patient care documentation, record keeping, pre-incident planning, and other job-related functions.
  • Drive and operate fire apparatus under the direction of the station officer.
  • Function as Engineer or Acting Officer in Charge (AOIC) when required.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Minimum of one year experience as a certified EMT.
  • Licensure as a Paramedic by the State of Utah Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services or NREMT-P, and complete state reciprocity within two months of hire date.
  • Maintain state-mandated continuing education requirements, including current American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or equivalent.
  • Required: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and ADO-Pumper through the Utah Fire Service Certification System.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. The employee is exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents, and oils.

The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particulates, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT/Paramedic activities when noise levels may be loud.

The employee will be required to work 48 to 96 hours a month with a minimum of 72 hours of availability each month.
