Utility Person B

As an American Waterworks Utility Person B, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and repair of underground water mains and distribution pipes. This includes locating, laying, repairing, and extending these systems. You will work outdoors, using proper safety equipment and personal protective gear, to ensure the safe and efficient operation of our water distribution system.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up barricades and safety lights around work sites to protect workers from street traffic.
- Break up asphalt and concrete using pneumatic power tools for trenching and compaction.
- Manually dig valve boxes and curb boxes using shovels and digging bars.
- Guide pipe sections, valves, and fittings into position and hold pieces steady while workers tighten connections.
- Tap into pressurized water mains.
- Flare and connect copper and plastic piping.
- Install repair clamps on pressurized water mains and service lines.
- Operate valves and fire hydrants.
- Investigate complaints and determine corrective action per company procedure.
- Operate pneumatic and/or hydraulic boring equipment.
- Complete all necessary forms, sketches, and field notes, and be knowledgeable of map and record usage.
- Drive vehicles and/or trucks in the performance of general job duties, including housekeeping of vehicles.
- Use company technology to perform assigned duties.
- Ensure environmental compliance with DEP and other government agencies and company regulations.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies, practices, and procedures.
- Precision working skills, using body members and/or tools or work aids to work, move, guide, or place objects or materials in situations where ultimate responsibility for the attainment of standards occurs.
- Valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
- DEP Water Class E operator's license, as per union contract.
- Ability to skillfully use hand tools or machines needed to work.
- Mathematical development sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure.
- Ability to measure, cut, or otherwise work on materials or objects with great precision.
- Ability to use arithmetic or shop geometry to figure amounts of material needed, dimensions to be followed, and cost of materials.
- Accept responsibility for the volume and accuracy of work.
- Ability to work outdoors with proper safety equipment and PPE.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions, safety rules, maps, diagrams, etc.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with company personnel.
- Data compilation, gathering, collating, or classifying information about work performed, people, or things.
- Pass Department of Transportation's physical examination.
- Ability to lift and/or carry 50 lbs. maximum, with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
