Space Systems Thermal Engineer

Virgin Galactic is a pioneering space travel company that aims to make space more accessible and open. As a Thermal Engineer, you will play a crucial role in advancing the thermal engineering development of our suborbital spaceplane Delta and other special projects.
About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Thermal Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and substantiating the thermal protection system for future spaceships, developing external heat transfer models using in-house simulators and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and performing model updates from data collected during vehicle or component testing.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop thermal protection systems for spacecraft and spaceships.
- Develop and improve standards, processes, and best practices for thermal engineering.
- Support pre-flight preparation, including the development of instrumentation plans and review of test limitations.
- Perform post-flight analysis and update thermal models accordingly.
Requirements and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering and 2 years of relevant work experience. You should also have proficiency in heat transfer, electromagnetic radiation, convection, and conduction, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Familiarity with Python, Matlab, or similar languages is desirable. Experience with finite element modeling, empirical modeling, and aerospace simulation development is also preferred.
Benefits
Virgin Galactic offers a competitive salary range of $72,500.00–$105,200.00 per year, depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience. We also provide a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, financial, and other benefits.
