As a Diagnostic Imaging Specialist, you will be responsible for operating computed tomography (CT) scanners to perform diagnostic imaging procedures for patients. Your expertise will be instrumental in ensuring high-quality images are captured, which will aid physicians in diagnosing medical conditions.
Key Responsibilities- Patient Preparation and Communication:
- Prepare patients for CT scans by explaining the procedure, addressing any questions or concerns, and ensuring their comfort throughout the process.
- Verify patient information, including medical history, allergies, and prior imaging, to guarantee accurate diagnosis and optimal imaging protocols.
- Position patients correctly on the CT table, prioritizing their safety and comfort at all times.
- Instruct patients on how to hold their breath or remain still during scans, as required by the procedure.
- Operation of CT Equipment:
- Operate and calibrate the CT scanner with precision, adjusting settings such as radiation dose, slice thickness, and imaging protocols as needed.
- Administer contrast agents or dye injections under physician guidance to enhance image clarity during specific CT procedures.
- Monitor equipment performance during imaging, ensuring high-quality images are captured and no errors occur during the process.
- Image Quality and Review:
- Assess CT images for quality, confirming that all necessary areas are captured and meet diagnostic standards.
- Collaborate closely with radiologists to ensure images are of sufficient quality to support diagnosis.
- Repeat or adjust scans as necessary to improve image quality or ensure comprehensive imaging coverage.
- Patient Safety and Comfort:
- Adhere to rigorous safety protocols to minimize radiation exposure to patients, utilizing the lowest possible dose for effective imaging and shielding when necessary.
- Maintain a sterile and safe environment in the CT room, sanitizing equipment between patients to prevent cross-contamination.
- Ensure proper patient positioning to prevent any risk of injury or discomfort during the scan, particularly for vulnerable patients.
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions to contrast agents and alert the physician or healthcare provider if necessary.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work seamlessly with physicians, radiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to determine the most effective imaging procedures and contribute to diagnosing medical conditions.
- Accurately document patient information, scan parameters, contrast media used, and any complications in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Participate in patient care planning, discussing with the team how to best approach imaging in complex cases.
- Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting on the CT scanner and associated equipment to ensure they function optimally.
- Conduct regular inspections and calibration of CT equipment, reporting any malfunctions or unsafe conditions to maintenance staff.
- Keep precise records of equipment use, maintenance, and repairs performed.
- Radiation Safety and Compliance:
- Comply with stringent radiation safety protocols to safeguard both patients and staff, adhering to dosage guidelines and using appropriate shielding.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, including HIPAA, safety standards, and Joint Commission guidelines.
- Stay up-to-date on changes to regulatory standards, such as radiation safety, patient privacy, and procedural guidelines.
- Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Accurately document imaging procedures, patient information, and any adverse events or changes in patient status.
- Guarantee all documentation aligns with hospital policies, medical record-keeping regulations, and industry standards.
- Assist in maintaining patient flow by providing swift turnaround times for imaging results when necessary.
- Patient Education and Support:
- Provide education and guidance to patients regarding aftercare following contrast injections, potential side effects, and follow-up procedures.
- Address patient concerns about the procedure, including fears of radiation exposure or claustrophobia, offering support as needed.
- Ensure patient privacy and dignity are maintained throughout the imaging process.
- Professional Development and Training:
- Participate in ongoing education to stay current with advancements in CT imaging technology, protocols, and safety procedures.
- Attend in-house training sessions and seminars on new imaging techniques or equipment.
- Maintain professional certification and licensure, including any continuing education requirements.
