Aquatic Safety Specialist

At the Young Men's Christian Association of Wichita Kansas, we are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Aquatic Safety Specialist to join our team. As a Lifeguard - Andover YMCA, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and enjoyable aquatic environment for our members and participants.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain all lifeguard skills as required in lifeguard certification.
  • Actively scan and maintain appropriate positioning in pool area at all times.
  • Immediately and properly respond to medical emergencies when they arise.
  • Effectively supervise participants to maintain safety standards.
  • Enforce all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
  • Positively correct any unsafe pool activity immediately.
  • Be knowledgeable and prepared to implement emergency procedures immediately.
  • Report all incidents/accidents on the appropriate form and provide to supervisor within 24 hours of event.
  • Never leave the pool unattended.
  • Follow all opening, closing, and shift procedures, including locking all doors leading to the pool area after swimming hours.
  • Report any facility or equipment irregularities to supervisor in writing.
  • Cleanliness of deck. Perform cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Maintain records as required (i.e., chemical readings, daily attendance logs).
  • Attend all required training sessions and scheduled meetings.
  • Responsible for scheduled hours; secure substitutes when necessary. Notify supervisor in advance, and in writing.
  • Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  • Support Strong Community Campaign fundraising.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Frequently perform physical activities such as swimming, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching with hands, sitting, standing for extended periods, walking, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Perform work both indoors and outdoors and be exposed to prevalent weather conditions.
  • Maintain lifeguard certification level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Visually see all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Adequately hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Remain alert and maintain concentration for long periods to ensure safety of participants.
  • Make independent and sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Show initiative in the absence of supervision.
  • Relate to and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.
  • Handle questions/concerns and resolve conflicts in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance.

Job Requirements:
  • Commitment to the YMCA mission, vision, and values.
  • Attend New Employee Orientation within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete BLS/AED, First Aid, O2, Lifeguard Certification in accordance with Conditions of Employment.
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures as set forth by the association.
  • Work a schedule that reflects the needs of the branch.
