We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Medical Care Specialist to join our team at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, part of Covenant Health Inc. in the Heart Lung Vascular Unit.

Job Summary

The Medical Care Specialist will work closely with our registered nurses to provide direct patient care, assisting with activities of daily living, and performing technical tasks as needed. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in medical terminology, excellent communication skills, and the ability to operate a computer efficiently.

About the Role

This is a full-time position, requiring 72 hours per pay period. You will work night shifts, ensuring that patients receive the highest level of care during their hospital stay. Our unit is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, providing you with the tools necessary to excel in your role.

Responsibilities

  • Taking and recording vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressures, weights, heights, and intake-output measurements.
  • Encouraging patients to turn, cough, and take deep breaths, using incentive spirometry as specified by their plan of care.
  • Ambulating patients, assisting them in and out of bed, into wheelchairs, and transporting when necessary.
  • Maintaining a safe environment, reporting any equipment malfunctions, handling linen, and storing supplies appropriately.
  • Providing general care, such as positioning, lifting, or turning patients, and assisting with bedpans, urinals, or commodes.
  • Collecting urine, stool, and sputum specimens as ordered.
  • Performing phlebotomy and EKG procedures (additional training may be required).
  • Promptly answering patient call lights and responding to requests.
  • Reporting significant changes in patients' conditions to registered nurses.
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly patient and work environment.
  • Documenting patient records as necessary.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • No specific educational requirements; however, a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) may be preferred.
  • Hospital experience is desired, but not mandatory. Medical terminology knowledge is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to read, write legibly, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • CPR certification (or willingness to obtain during orientation). BLS certification is also required.
