Radiation Therapist Job Description

The Radiation Therapist plays a crucial role in delivering high-energy radiation to cancer patients under the supervision of a Radiation Oncologist. This position requires a strong understanding of radiation therapy principles and the ability to work closely with patients and medical staff.

Responsibilities:
  • Deliver high-energy radiation to cancer patients using advanced technology and equipment.
  • Accurately record daily and accumulated doses in patient charts.
  • Conduct daily CT/KV/MV films of treatment portals to ensure accurate radiation delivery.
  • Recognize and report radiation side effects to nurses and/or physicians.
  • Schedule daily treatment sessions to accommodate patients' chemotherapy schedules and other medical appointments.
  • Perform daily machine warm-up and check-out of radiation equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and organized treatment area, restocking supplies as needed.
  • Provide psychological and emotional support to patients undergoing radiation therapy.
  • Assist with simulation backup and daily chart checks, including importing OSMS reports and photos.
Requirements:
  • Associate Degree or 2 years of college coursework in a related field.
  • No prior work experience required, but a minimum of 500 hours of clinical training is preferred.
  • Registered Radiation Therapist certification and Healthcare Provider (CPR) certification are required.
  • Ability to work closely with others and function as a team.
  • Computer experience necessary, with good verbal communication skills.
  • Registry Eligible Radiation Therapist acceptable, with a requirement to receive registry within one year of hire.
Working Conditions:

This position involves working in a fast-paced environment with moderate physical effort, including lifting, carrying, and handling equipment and supplies. The Radiation Therapist will be exposed to dirt, odors, and noise, as well as temperature and weather extremes. The position requires frequent but limited contact with patients and medical staff, with occasional contact with blood-borne pathogens and other potentially infectious diseases.
