Job Summary

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals is seeking a highly qualified Federal Public Defender to join our team. As a key member of our office, you will be responsible for providing exceptional legal representation to criminal defendants, ensuring their rights are protected, and upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a member in good standing of the highest court of at least one state or the District of Columbia, and a member in good standing of every other State Bar of which they are a member.
  • Have a minimum of five years of criminal practice experience, preferably with significant federal criminal trial experience, demonstrating an ability to provide zealous representation of consistently high quality to criminal defendants.
  • Be able to effectively administer the office, ensuring efficient and effective operations.
  • Have a reputation for integrity, upholding the highest ethical standards.
  • Be committed to the representation of those unable to afford counsel, demonstrating a strong sense of social responsibility.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing exceptional legal representation to criminal defendants, ensuring their rights are protected and their interests are advocated for.
  • Administering the office, ensuring efficient and effective operations, and making strategic decisions to achieve our goals.
  • Upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethics, reflecting positively on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues, judges, and other stakeholders to achieve our mission and objectives.
