About the Role:

We are seeking a skilled Disease Surveillance Specialist to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting regional surveillance for notifiable infectious diseases, investigating naturally occurring disease outbreaks, and reviewing written and electronic disease reports. They will also be required to abstract, review, and interpret medical information, including laboratory results, and complete investigations and consult with physicians, laboratories, hospital personnel, and the public.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Conducts regional surveillance for notifiable infectious diseases, including COVID-19 and other novel and notifiable infectious diseases
  • Investigates naturally occurring disease outbreaks, immediately reportable disease conditions, and bioterrorism events
  • Reviews written and electronic disease reports and electronic laboratory reports to identify reportable conditions and ensures the data meet the established disease case definitions
  • Investigates, interviews, and files communicable disease surveillance reports, monitors and improves surveillance procedures, abstracts, reviews, and interprets medical information, including labs, completes investigations and consults with physicians, laboratories, hospital personnel, and the public

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as epidemiology, public health, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of principles of epidemiology and Texas public health laws, especially those that govern the control and reporting of notifiable conditions
  • Knowledge of the transmission of infectious diseases, epidemiological investigations, and working discreetly while maintaining confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and present complex information to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting, exercising sound judgment

Working Conditions:

This position requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to build effective relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, and the public.

Salary Information:

The salary for this position is estimated to be between $60,000 - $80,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.
