Job Summary

As a Brake Operator at SPX, you will play a crucial role in fabricating metallic parts using conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers. Your primary responsibility will be to set up and operate these machines to produce high-quality parts that meet our stringent specifications.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Design and Development: Design and/or develop tools, jigs, and fixtures used in production to ensure efficient and accurate part fabrication.
  2. Blueprint Analysis: Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  3. Machining and Fabrication: Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or workpieces as guides for subsequent machining. Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
  4. Machine Operation: Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media. Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
  5. Quality Control: Verify conformance of finished workpieces to specifications. Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data. Fit and assemble parts into complete assemblies, verifying dimensions and alignment.
  6. Installation and Testing: Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance. Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. A fully qualified Machinist will have completed, including passing a written test, and satisfactory completion of at least eight terms of machinist courses at an accredited technical school.
  • Experience: One to three months related experience and/or training is required.
Work Environment

The employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
