Job Description:

Northwestern Memorial Healthcare is seeking a skilled Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our Neurosurgery department.

This opportunity involves approximately 50% inpatient and 50% outpatient responsibilities, with the ability to conduct independent clinic visits, see new consults, perform inpatient rounding, procedures, and first assists, as well as other duties assigned.

The schedule is Monday through Friday, with days only, no nights or weekends required, but opportunities for weekend coverage may be available based on needs.

Location: Palos Hospital

Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrate clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities, which may include diagnosis and management of various health problems.
  • Be responsible for the health outcomes of an assigned patient population.
  • Confer with collaborating physicians and other healthcare professionals in areas of clinical expertise.
  • Develop educational systems for patients, families, and staff in areas of expertise.
  • Mentor graduate students in aspects of advanced practice and patient care.
  • Actively participate in quality improvement and/or research pertinent to areas of expertise.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive appraisals of patients' health status by taking health histories and performing physical examinations.
  • Provide direct clinical care to patients.
  • Preset medications, therapies; order/interpret laboratory tests, x-rays, and procedures according to clinical privileges.
  • Evaluate patients to determine their need for further healthcare.
  • Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families.
  • Document all care and education provided and/or procedures performed for which the Licensed Advanced Practice Provider is responsible.
  • Refer to other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Consult to other disciplines in areas of expertise.
  • Integrate research-based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision-making.
  • Exemplify a professional image in appearance, manner, and presentation.
  • Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community.
  • Maintain certifications and continuing education as required for licensure and privileging.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and role model for "Patients First".
  • Participate in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces as appropriate.
  • Provide comprehensive teaching strategies for patients and their families.
  • Develop and participate in programs to meet continuing education needs of staff.
  • Serve as a role model and preceptor to students.
  • Provide formal education to both internal and external groups pertinent to areas of specialty.
  • Participate in quality improvement and/or research initiatives for specific patient populations as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree from accredited school/college of nursing OR master's degree from accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Acute Care certification required for APRNs unless FNPs have extensive experience in inpatient setting as APRN, not new grad RN (inpatient experience must be listed on CV).
  • Current license as Registered Nurse in State of Illinois. Current license as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in State of Illinois. Certification as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by national certifying body as approved by Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board. Once licensed may apply for controlled substance license and DEA number OR Master's degree from accredited Physician Assistant Program/Current license as Physician Assistant in State of Illinois. Once licensed may apply for controlled substance license and DEA number.
  • Privileged and credentialed through NMH Medical Staff Office (MSO).
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation - BLS, issued by American Heart Association.

Salary: $120,000 - $150,000 per year
