About the Role

James Madison University is seeking two part-time Computer Surplus Specialists to join our team. As a Computer Surplus Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the proper accounting and disposition of the university's computer equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process departmental surplus computer equipment forms in an Access database to create work orders and schedule pickup of equipment from various locations on campus.
  • Verify information on forms with items being picked up to ensure only approved items are surplused.
  • Use a departmental van to pick up and transport surplus equipment to the warehouse for processing.
  • Record computer equipment receipts into a database for monthly reporting of surplused equipment to IT for updating their system.
  • Maintain security of all equipment under the responsibility of Computer Surplus.
  • Process equipment for recycling by entering information into a spreadsheet manifest, palletizing equipment, shrink wrapping, and moving pallets to temporary storage areas of the warehouse.
  • Work with electronics recycler staff during scheduled appointments to ensure complete manifests of equipment are picked up.
  • Work with JMU IT to have newer technology computer equipment tested for possible re-issue to campus and record equipment in departmental databases when re-issued to departments.
  • Complete departmental forms for transfers out of Computer Surplus.
  • Communicate regularly with Fixed Assets and Surplus Property staff and respond to email messages received through the Computer Surplus departmental mailbox on a daily basis.
  • Frequently interact with customers, both on the phone and in person.
  • Assist with annual inventory of Computer Surplus equipment that is active in the fixed assets system.
  • Assist with Surplus Property special projects and sales as requested.
Requirements
  • General knowledge of computer equipment and peripherals.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Ability to perform accurate and detailed work and apply policies and procedures.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and operate a pallet jack.
  • Must be at least 19 years old and possess a valid driver's license.
Additional Considerations
  • Previous experience with data management systems.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
Conditions of Employment

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check. These are part-time wage positions working up to an average of 29 hours per week over the course of a calendar year with no benefits.
