Job Summary

This role focuses on the research, analysis, and performance of tasks within the laboratory, including research for pathology, histology, and phlebotomy. The Apheresis Technologist will perform a variety of chemical, microscopic, or bacteriologic tests, monitor test results, ensure test validity, investigate new procedures, and implement quality control programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform aseptic technique to access and maintain ports and access catheters.
  • Perform outpatient blood component transfusions.
  • Perform autologous, directed donor, and research blood collections.
  • Perform therapeutic phlebotomy and isovolumetric reductions.
  • Perform therapeutic leukophereis, plateletpheresis and erythopheresis and plasma pheresis procedures.
  • Perform HPC,A autologous and allogeneic collections.
  • Perform extracorporeal photopheresis techniques.
  • Responsible for monitoring and managing patient care during above procedures and for the recognition and treatment of complications and reactions.
  • Responsible for set-up, prime, operation, and troubleshooting of apheresis and photopheresis equipment utilized during above procedures.
  • Responsible for maintenance and quality control of equipment in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Document all aspects of patient/donor care in compliance with the AABB standards, Code of Federal Regulations, and applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient/donor records.
  • Complete registration of patients/donors into the admission/BBTS systems.
  • Enter patient/donor charges daily.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe working environment and to ensure that supplies are stocked and maintained.
  • Responsible for performing and interpreting Quality Control.
  • Participates in professional development and continuing educational activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology.
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or (AMT).
  • Three (3) years of experience Technologist experience in blood bank.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Blood Bank Technologist Certification (ASCP).
  • Blood Bank Specialist Certification (ASCP).

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking.
  • Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfer patients and equipment.
  • Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, materials, sick patients, bodily substances, noise and possible exposure to radiation, lasers, electric shock, etc.
  • Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases and other transmissible infections.
  • Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
  • Handle emergency and crisis situations.
  • Subjected to irregular hours.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of standards, equipment, best practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to collaborate, communicate, and cooperate with other health care providers to ensure quality and continuity of care
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret data and make determinations/conclusions.
  • Good computer skills.
