Job Summary

As a key member of our Visitor Experience and Engagement department, you will play a vital role in ensuring that our visitors have an exceptional experience during their visit to the Museum.

About the Role

The primary goals of this position are to welcome visitors, sell daily admission, memberships, check-in guests, manage lines, and work in Coat Check, storing coats and backpacks for visitors while they explore the Museum during Museum hours, special events, rentals, and programs after hours. Greeting visitors and monitoring timed entry into the ticketed exhibitions requires a welcoming presence and excellent communication skills. The Coat Check requires this person to be on their feet for long periods of time and work diligently to store and retrieve visitors' belongings. The ideal candidate can multitask with ease and possesses strong hospitality, organizational, and teamwork skills. The ability to maintain a positive attitude while working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment is crucial.

Responsibilities
  • Greet all visitors with warmth and kindness while effectively communicating exhibition guidelines, ticketing policies, day-of events, and offer guidance.
  • Manage lines for the exhibition through strong organizational skills and effective communication with staff and visitors.
  • Check in guests and monitor timed entry into exhibitions and program spaces
  • Sell daily Museum admission, event tickets, and Memberships; process credit cards and ring up cash.
  • Staff coat check, which requires storing, retrieving, and organizing visitor's belongings with care.
  • Demonstrate holistic knowledge of the Brooklyn Museum's exhibitions, programming, Membership benefits, events, facilities, and operational changes (all staff members will be given time to become familiar with the Museum).
  • Provide directions so visitors can navigate the building with ease
  • Scan tickets and work in Coat Check during occasional special events after regular hours of operation (shifts will be assigned on a rotating basis)
  • Work on the first Saturday of each month during First Saturdays programming and mandatory quarterly training session
  • Attend the Morning Meeting at the beginning of each shift
  • Read and absorb information in daily notes
  • Hold Interest and Knowledge survey with randomly selected visitors.
Qualifications

A successful candidate will meet many of these requirements, and have the desire and capacity to learn the rest on the job.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience cash handling and the ability to maintain an organized cash drawer.
  • Ability to learn nuanced ticketing policies and effectively communicate them to visitors.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to the Brooklyn Museum's mission to provide customer service that is welcoming and inclusive to all, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, or age.
  • Ability to work well within a team.
  • A positive attitude (we believe positivity is contagious and fosters a collaborative workflow built on kindness and support)

Department: Visitor Experience and Engagement

Reports to: Associate Manager of Visitor Experience
Position type: Part-Time
Salary: $23 hourly
Union status: Union-UAW Local 2110
FLSA status: Non-exempt
Schedule: 15-21 hours per week on average. One weekend day a week is required. The Museum is open 11am-6pm Wednesday-Sunday, and shifts are 10:15am-6pm. Working special events after regular hours of operation is mandatory and will be assigned on a rotating basis. The First Saturday of the month is a required and mandatory shift.
