Job Summary

Tufts Medicine is seeking a skilled Medical Assistant to join our team. This role is responsible for providing high-quality patient care and support in our outpatient setting.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Control and monitor patient flow to maximize efficient use of providers and exam rooms.
  2. Prepare medical records for patient visits, confirming accuracy with patient identifiers, and entering chief complaint and social history.
  3. Exercise excellent customer service skills in all interactions with patients, internal and external customers, and provide a safe, comfortable, and clean environment for patients and families.
  4. Assist providers, patients, and families with admitting patients into the hospital, making out clothing lists, and facilitating smooth transitions to inpatient units.
  5. Escort patients to exam rooms, prepare patients for provider visits, and check to ensure patient comfort, privacy, and safety.
  6. Ensure patient and personal safety, determine fall risk, and implement appropriate measures.
  7. Prepare exam rooms for each patient according to their needs.
  8. Assist and/or chaperone providers/nursing with physical exams, treatments, and procedures as necessary.
  9. Perform and record vital signs, review medication lists with patients, and collect specimens as ordered.
  10. Perform Point of Care Testing (POC) as ordered, including urine dips, HCG testing, Strep A, HGB A1C, and glucose testing.
  11. May be required to perform phlebotomy.
  12. Assist in arranging for diagnostic testing, surgery, and in-patient admissions under the direction of nurses or physicians.
  13. Assist with patient billing by ensuring CPT codes, diagnosis codes, and all supplies and procedures are indicated on charting.
  14. Ensure outside paperwork is scanned into patient electronic medical records, process and track referrals and prior authorizations as requested/ordered by providers, and notify providers of patient requests for referrals and prescription renewals.
  15. Use proper techniques and procedures for hazardous waste disposal, universal precautions, and body mechanics, and maintain clinic rooms according to infection control and cleaning policies.
  16. Stock, maintain, and rotate supplies in clinic rooms daily according to clinic demands, monitor expiration dates, and monitor supply inventory for clinics and order supplies as needed.
  17. Participate in unit-specific quality improvement projects, such as hand-washing audits, time-outs, refrigerator/medication logs, and daily/monthly code cart checks.
  18. Provide administrative support, which may include coordinating interpreter services, answering telephone calls, taking accurate messages, forwarding messages, and faxing.

Requirements

  1. Frequent standing and walking for up to 80% of the workday or shift.
  2. Some lifting, pushing, or pulling required.
  3. Occasional stress and pressure caused by multiple simultaneous demands.
  4. Exposed to various body fluids along with exposure to infectious disease and sharps.
  5. Occasional requests to change work areas to cover another priority area to meet patient needs.
  6. Frequent contact with patients, families, visitors, nurses, and other department staff.

Skills and Abilities

  1. Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail required.
  2. Ability to work independently and accurately with excellent follow-through.
  3. Basic to moderate computer skills, including documents, spreadsheets, email, and automated scheduling software, and the ability to navigate through hospital-based computer systems.
  4. Ability to read, write, and spell in English to ensure accurate message taking.
  5. Knowledge of business math, ability to make calculations, and analytical skills required.
  6. Good interpersonal skills.
  7. Knowledge and ability to use universal precautions and knowledge of patient handling.
  8. Ability to complete and pass competency exams in waived test lists for practice.
  9. Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential patient information according to HIPAA.
