About the Role

The Mental Health Specialist/Safety position is a critical member of our team at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital's Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders (CADD) inpatient unit. We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team and contribute to the development and maintenance of a therapeutic environment for patients experiencing emotional disturbance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the development and implementation of individualized patient care plans, ensuring a comprehensive and holistic approach to patient care.
  • Provide supportive interpersonal relationships with individuals and groups of patients, promoting a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Contribute to the supervision and assistance of patients with personal hygiene tasks, including bathing, dressing, eating, and organizing personal belongings.
  • Participate as a Treatment Team member in assessing the social and emotional needs of patients, providing early intervention and support.
  • Assist in physical restraint techniques necessary to control violent or combative patients, maintaining a safe environment while adhering to age-specific competencies and guidelines.
  • Initiate debriefing sessions and provide feedback to staff after seclusion and restraint situations, promoting a culture of safety and respect.
  • Document patient encounters in medical records and progress notes, ensuring accurate and timely documentation.
  • Engage patients in safety-related groups and activities, promoting a sense of community and responsibility.
  • Assist with Mental Health Hearing processes, ensuring compliance with staffing needs and regulatory requirements.
  • Meet and greet ambulance personnel, ensuring a smooth transition for admissions.
  • Monitor visiting hour activity, ensuring a safe and calm milieu.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of each patient as an individual within the framework of the family, promoting a patient-centered approach.
  • Plan and participate in educational, social, and recreational activities for individuals and groups of patients, promoting a holistic approach to patient care.
  • Conduct proactive safety rounds throughout the units, monitoring the milieu and identifying potential safety concerns.
  • Document and report any unsafe conditions or security violations, ensuring a safe and secure environment.
  • Provide assistance as requested to clinical staff in the care and safety of patients, staff, or visitors.
  • Respond to Condition M calls in a professional manner, adhering to age-specific guidelines and competencies.
  • Provide trainings in safety issues specific to the needs of the units, promoting a culture of safety and respect.
  • Assist in investigating reports of incidents, ensuring a thorough and timely response.
Qualifications
  • Associate Degree with 2 years' work experience within MH/MR service.
  • Enrolled in Bachelor's Degree program in an associated field of study with 2 years of related work experience in a hospital or community setting with psychiatric patients.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services field.
  • Experience in Behavioral Health preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC).
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal.
  • Act 33 with renewal.
  • Act 34 with renewal.
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.
