Job Description

Metal Technicians are considered industry leaders, mastering all skill sets and possessing a positive attitude towards employees and clients. They must be exceptional producers, generating maximum production with minimal errors, while making decisions and exhibiting sound judgment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Comply with all safety and OSHA procedures and requirements
  2. Maintain a copy of the work order in the left corner of dash throughout repair process
  3. Be responsible for all repairs assigned and listed on the work order, including additional notes requesting special requests or repair procedures from company or customer
  4. Cover any vehicle to be repaired to prevent overspray from coming in contact with vehicle surfaces
  5. Perform initial tear down and thorough inspection for missing items and labors on work order, reporting any items to Estimator and Parts Manager as quickly as possible
  6. Complete repairs in a quality manner, following the company's Repair Standards
  7. Apply undercoating, corrosion protection, gravel guard, seam sealer, weld-thru primer, and lubricants as needed or listed on the repair order
  8. Reassemble vehicle after painting, performing headlight adjustment and other final alignments and adjustments prior to delivery
  9. Conduct straightening and repairs according to factory specifications and I-CAR procedures, including door, hood, and deck alignments, chassis and frame measurements, welded on unibody parts, etc.
  10. Advise Management upon nearing completion of job and request new assignment
  11. Remain aware of target delivery dates for jobs in progress and strive to meet those dates as listed on windshield tags
  12. Be accountable for all parts for assigned jobs
  13. Maintain good work attitude and cooperate with managers and fellow employees in a positive spirit of teamwork
  14. Show proficiency in metal straightening, plastic finish work, and structural repair and welding
  15. Display knowledge of various plastics, urethanes, and other compounds, as well as their properties and repair processes
  16. Demonstrate ability to diagnose and correctly repair damage
  17. Follow work order through completion of job
  18. Perform all repairs to company standards
  19. Prevent overspray from coming in contact with any body part, trim, tires, wheels, etc.
  20. Rework any repair that does not meet company standards or customers' expectations
  21. Perform quality check on refinish work prior to reassembly
  22. Participate in daily release meeting
  23. Notify Management immediately of any vehicle not meeting target date
  24. Maintain tools and equipment within department
  25. Apply metal conditioners, corrosion protection, and weld-through primers as needed
  26. Collect and inspect all parts assigned to job, verifying correctness and saving original packing materials
  27. Notify Parts Manager if any parts are incorrect
  28. Keep disassembly process in mind, considering another Technician may reassemble vehicle
  29. Save supplemental parts until repairs are completed and vehicle delivered to owner
  30. Remove stripe tape, molding, and emblem adhesive on complete panels to be repaired
  31. Cover repair area with protective blanket when welding or grinding
  32. Coat bare metal with approved weld-through primer before welding, applying seam sealer between surfaces to be welded
  33. Align outer sheet metal to vehicle, attaching firmly with tech screws or vise grips to prevent movement during welding
  34. Feather surrounding areas of repaired area with 150 grit sandpaper to remove coarse sanding marks and scratches
  35. Clean repair areas with blow gun, inspecting for defects (pinholes, sandmarks, etc.) before sending vehicle to paint department
  36. Blow car off completely to remove dust before sending to paint department
  37. Keep repair areas small to reduce risk of excessive paint blending
  38. Notify Management of any delays in repair process
  39. Use compression welder whenever practical
  40. Use adhesives in conjunction with welding as per OEM recommendations
  41. Accurately and punctually use time clock
  42. Present clean and neat appearance at all times
  43. Maintain clean and orderly production area throughout workday
