Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Accountant II to join our team at the State of Maryland. As an Accountant II, you will assist the Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Financial Officer in performing accounting work in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Examine, analyze, and interpret accounting systems, records, and reports to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Responsible for duties in the areas of cost accounting, system accounting, and federal fund accounting, as well as general accounting tasks such as payroll, petty cash, working fund, credit cards, accounts payable/receivable, and financial analysis.
  • Assist with preparing year-end accounts payables, journal entries, accrued expenditures, encumbrances, and researching discrepancies.
  • Process journal entries and voucher payments in FMIS, record transactions on tracking sheets, and reconcile bank accounts.
  • Track grant activity in Excel spreadsheets and Google Tracking Sheet, and assist in the processing of various grants such as Federal Financial Participation (FFP) billing to the Department of Health.
  • Track payroll activity for both regular and contractual payrolls.
Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing.
  • Two years of experience examining, analyzing, and interpreting accounting systems, records, and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Possession of a certificate as a Certified Public Accountant or a master's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • Applicants may substitute one year of professional auditing experience for one year of the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • State of MD accounting/finance experience.
  • Experience working with state and federal grants.
