Job Summary

Bexar County, TX is seeking a skilled Mechanic II to join our team in the Heavy Fleet Maintenance department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing complex repairs and maintenance on equipment and machinery in assigned buildings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains building equipment and machinery
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains security equipment
  • Monitors electronic energy management equipment to maintain proper environmental control of the buildings
  • Repairs commercial laundry and kitchen appliances
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing and drainage systems
  • Monitors and maintains fire protection equipment and systems
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains heating and air conditioning equipment and systems
  • Replaces and/or repairs metal security ceiling tile, acoustical ceiling tile, vinyl floor tile, and ceramic tile
  • Performs preventive maintenance on electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems
  • Replaces and/or repairs electrical wiring, switches, and light bulbs
  • Documents work performed to assist in legal documentation required by lawsuits and state law
  • May supervise the daily work activities of less senior employees
  • Assists in training entry-level employees
  • Performs other duties as required
Requirements
  • Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and five (5) years' experience in commercial building equipment repairs and maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Considerable knowledge of commercial building equipment repairs and maintenance, including plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, electronics, and HVAC systems; considerable knowledge of all related tools and equipment; good knowledge of safety standards and practices
  • Skill in operating all related tools and equipment
  • Ability to perform a variety of maintenance functions; ability to read and follow instructions; ability to calculate time and material estimates; ability to exercise independent judgment when necessary; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, and outside agencies
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • Positions budgeted within County-Jail Maintenance Sections must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office
  • Must be able and willing to attend training at department's discretion
  • May be assigned to any or various county facilities
  • May be required to work in jail environment
  • Required to be on call 24/7/365
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
  • When required, shall work extra hours, holidays, weekends, and other shifts
  • Required to work rotating shifts
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
  • Working conditions are primarily indoors with occasional outdoor exposure
  • May be required to work in jail environment
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as damp/wet surfaces, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
  • Frequently moves equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, occasionally moves objects weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Will frequently communicate with co-workers; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Frequently moves about buildings
