Job Title: Material/Process Inspector I or IIJob Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Material/Process Inspector I or II to join our team at the Texas Department of Transportation. As a Material/Process Inspector, you will be responsible for performing material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants, and/or at points of supply.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts nuclear density tests on subgrade, base, and asphaltic concrete pavement.
  • Conducts pavement evaluations in the field.
  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, and material producers and suppliers.
  • Investigates compaction problems associated with hot mix asphaltic concrete.
  • Keeps equipment mileage and service records and schedules equipment repairs.
  • Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Maintains field record books for each construction project within assigned area office.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
  • Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Secures, logs in, and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
  • Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses, and project sites to monitor status of programs.
  • Works full-time at a geographically separated location.
Additional Responsibilities for Material/Process Inspector II:
  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
  • Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.
  • Coordinates core drill or auger rig operations.
  • Maintains inventory of test supplies.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
  • Material/Process Inspector I: None.
  • Material/Process Inspector II: 1 YEAR Laboratory work, material inspection, or other eng-related work (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).
  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have or obtain certification in one of the listed HMA certifications within 12 months of date of hire.

  • Performing calculations using algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals.
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Applicable testing methods, processes, and procedures.
  • Laboratory testing procedures and methodologies.
  • Nuclear gauge operation.
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
  • Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment.
  • Conducting laboratory tests.
  • Calibrating equipment.
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to noise. Subject to vibration. Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals. Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation. Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs. Standing-prolonged periods of time.

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation - 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) - does not authorize "medical marijuana" under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
