About the Role

As a Patient Care Assistant, you will be working under the supervision of an RN or Team Leader to provide direct patient care and support. Your primary responsibility will be to assist registered nurses with tasks such as hands-on care, assistance with ADLs, and specified technical tasks for a group of patients.

Responsibilities

  • Taking and recording vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressures, weights, heights, and intake-output measurements.
  • Encouraging patients to turn, cough, and take deep breaths, and using incentive spirometry as specified by the Plan of Care.
  • Ambulating and assisting patients in and out of bed, into wheelchairs, and transporting when necessary.
  • Providing morning or evening care, which may include bed baths, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning over-bed tables and bedside stands, straightening rooms, and other supportive care as needed.
  • Emptying drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins and recording intake and output.
  • Assisting in maintaining a safe environment, which may include reporting equipment that is out of order, appropriate handling of linen, and storing of supplies.
  • Providing general care, including positioning, lifting, or turning patients; assisting with the use of bedpans, urinals, or commodes; preoperative supportive care; and application/removal of abdominal binders or anti-embolism stockings and sequential compression devices.
  • Collecting urine, stool, and sputum specimens as ordered.
  • Performing tasks such as ROM, assisting with ambulatory devices as specified by the patients' plan of care.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you must have excellent communication skills and be able to work well in a team environment. A high school diploma or equivalent certificate (GED) is preferred, but not required. Previous hospital experience is also preferred. Medical terminology is a plus, and the ability to operate a computer is essential.

Compensation

The estimated salary for this position is $25-$35 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. This equates to an annual salary of approximately $50,000-$70,000, based on a 40-hour workweek.
