Responsibilities:
  • Safely operate a school bus on an assigned route, transporting passengers to and from designated locations.
  • Maintain accurate records of route sheets, time changes, and notify supervisors immediately of any changes.
  • Adhere to good work habits, including timeliness and low absenteeism for daily assignments and extra trips.
  • Properly care for assigned vehicles and their component parts to ensure safety, minimize wear, and extend their useful life.
  • Operate two-way communication equipment correctly and according to company policy.
  • Inspect vehicles before, during, and after each trip, completing all necessary forms and reports.
  • Operate adaptive transportation lifts to board and discharge challenged passengers safely and responsibly.
  • Keep vehicles clean and orderly, performing daily cleaning after each route operated, and checking for lost items.
  • Maintain a presentable appearance, adhering to company standards for dress, grooming, and hygiene.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and passengers, promoting company goodwill.
  • Control emergency situations properly.
  • Control vehicle keys, fueling slip receipts, pre-trip and post-trip forms while in possession, and turn in to dispatch as required.
  • Successfully complete driving skills evaluations.
  • Attend all required in-service training, company safety meetings, and other required meetings.
  • Comply with all contractual obligations, local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to vehicle operation.
  • Report every accident, no matter how insignificant, immediately.
  • Accurately maintain proper shift documentation reports and records.
  • Follow correct end-of-shift procedures.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Requirements:
  • Valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or Class B or higher Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.
  • Satisfactory driving record.
  • Meet Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card requirements.
  • Licensed motor vehicle operator with no suspensions or revocations within the last three years.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Passenger and School Bus endorsements.
  • Valid School Bus Certificate.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
  • At least one year of previous professional driving experience.
  • Previous bus or other heavy-duty vehicle driving experience.
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Effective written and spoken communication skills.
  • Ability to read a map and possess knowledge of the service area.
  • Flexibility to work varying hours.
  • Hospitable, guest/customer service-oriented, and willing to serve passenger needs.
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving.
  • Ability to safely drive various vehicles.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, and passengers.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to perform duties under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to make independent judgments with moderate impacts on the organization.
  • Pass pre-employment physical, drug testing, background screenings, and criminal background check including fingerprinting.
Physical Demands:
  • 90% of work accomplished outside or in a vehicle, working in extreme heat and cold, and in wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Less than 10% of work accomplished indoors and in air-conditioned or well-ventilated facilities.
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibrations with moderate noise.
  • Frequently required to sit.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands or arms, and talk or hear.
  • Performs physical activities requiring considerable use of arms, legs, repetitive hand-wrist motion, and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, crouching, or crawling.
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule as needed.
  • Occasionally required to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • The vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, night vision, and ability to adjust focus.
